JEF MONTES' WOMANSWEAR LABEL

‘Jef Montes is a womenswear couture label founded in 2012 by designer Jef Montes and is based in Arnhem, The Netherlands. After graduating cum laude at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in 2012, he started working on collections with a strong focus on translating personal heritage, mostly founded in ancestral objects, to contemporary silhouettes executed in experimental fabrications. With a fascination for light, his designs are often visually enhanced through the use of artificial lightning combined with daylight.

JEF MONTES Velero - July 2015 - Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Amsterdam

The aim for creating innovative materials stays an important factor within the exploratory identity of Jef Montes. For every collection a new type of material has been designed and developed. All of his collections indicate the ongoing design process, where silhouettes are created based on elementary and architectural shapes, materials often are manipulated or melted together, and where through deconstructing the fabric and afterwards treating or embellishing it, a new type of beauty arises.

Since the launch of the label, his creations are to be seen in international exhibitions. Through press, editorial coverage and publications, his vision had been put in different contexts. This has led him to successful collaborations with artists, musicians, product designers, dance performances and several other companies. In 2014 he made his debut at Amsterdam Fashion Week, where he showed his collection Illuminosa. One year later, he presented his collection Velero in an off-schedule show. Through presentation he searches for unique ways to transmit a feeling towards the spectator and make an artificial statement.

Collection Velero:
Jef Montes drew inspiration from sailboats and the materials they are constructed from. Montes translated this to materials such as fiberglass, carbon, brass, nylon, aramid, silk, wool, viscose and cotton. His fascination for sailboats is originated in his youth, when he watched his grandfather - a retired fisherman - build miniature versions.

Product/ Concept/ Process description:
The silhouettes in the collection are based on the shapes of the sailboat. Materials seem to move around the body like a ship in a storm: geometrical and organic at the same time – inspired by a clash between technology and nature.

Jef developed his distinctive silhouettes even further and played with symmetry and asymmetry. The character of the fabrics often dictate the silhouettes. Due to the extensive experimenting with the materials and the way the silhouettes are created, every look has its own story.

Fire and water were key-factors in the creative process. Jef used fire to literally blow up materials and subsequently decorated burned parts with Swarovski crystals. Experiments with water-soluble material and chemical reactions resulted in innovative fabrics.
