OTHERWORLDLY

-Avant-Garde Fashion and Style

Theo-Mass Lexileictous, Sven Ehmann, Robert Klanten

Fashion from another planet. Unwearable, subversive, radically post-human, alien. Otherworldly presents avant-garde garments, styling, fashion photography, and young designers who are a whole galaxy away from the mainstream.

About This Book
Other rules apply to the fashion of the future. New technologies and materials make things possible today that couldn’t have even been imagined in the past. High-tech fabrics and melting forms are no longer science fiction but reality. Inspired by the odd, mutant, and deformed, many designers and stylists are now redefining clothing to expand the body and speculate on the evolution of identity—from wearables to the utter transfiguration of the human silhouette.

About the guest editor
Theo-Mass Lexileictous works at the intersection of fashion and media. Since receiving his degree at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, he has worked for Lady Gaga and brands including Givenchy and Topshop.

Otherworldly showcases a fashion avant-garde between futurism and fetish. Featuring work by emerging talents and established designers such as Alexander McQueen, Martin Margiela, Lucy McRae, Peter Popps, Iris van Herpen, and others, it not only explores groundbreaking developments but also their fruitful interplay with photography.

The work of Theo-Mass Lexileictous is hard to define as it exists at the intersection of performance, fashion design, and fine art. As co-editor of the new book Otherworldly, Lexileictous has a studied foundation in futuristic fashion and avant-garde haute couture. He spoke with Gestalten.tv about his outlandish costumes, artistic alter ego, and the blooming relationship between technology and fashion.

After explaining the title of this wonderful book OTHERWORLDLY, the foreword by Greg French describes how fashion with its propensity for playing with fantasy and making dreams into reality is a kind of gateway to immerge ourselves in the idea of the otherworldly. From the receptive weaving of the designer’s needle to the acute precision of a 3D printer, and from the flash of the photographer’s bulb to the pixel rendered on a digital display, fashion transforms our naked bodies, pages, and screens into something other than their most basic forms.

And this book ensures that all these items become visible in wondrous pronunciations. Sketching the history of fantasy in theatre, film and art, the book shows the powerful tool for radically altering the world we see around us.
Then pages follow alphabetically on sixty individual designers from Nikoline Liv Andersen via Alexander McQueen, Martin Margiela, Lucy McRae, Peter Popps, Iris van Herpen to Robert Wun.

This book is a must, conceived, edited and so well-designed by Gestalten. With über-quality photos and well-written text. A feast for the eyes and food for the spirit!
