IN SITU ART LINE 3°7’45”
PROJECT LIGHT MERIDIAN LINE
through any place on earth an imaginary north-south line runs from the north pole to the south pole: a longitude or meridian. simultaneously for all places on a meridian, the sun shines every day a few moments perpendiculary to the meridian (at ‘real’ noon or ‘apogee’).
the meridian of 3°7’45” east of greenwich connects striking many places that refer to light, silver, white, gray etc. this merid- ian coming from the north pole enters the european continent right at the casino tower (blue lighthouse) of blankenberge #be. it leaves the mainland at ‘el faro’, the lighthouse of the spanish palamós. along the way the meridian connects places like la roche blanche, le crest, the highway ‘la méridienne’, torroella de montgri. in roeselare the meridian crosses the archaeological site of ancient ‘silver’berg and the muze’um L, Light & Landscape.
that is why it’s called “the light meridian”. the light meridian con- nects places with the same solar time, which are furthermore linked to each other by references to ‘light’.

A LIGHT LINE OF ARTISTIC BEACONS
the light meridian will be the central axis for continuous or ephemeral art events and ‘in situ’ experiments.
the light meridian acts as a catalyst for creation around light, line and landscape as there are exhibitions, small concerts or literary acts, etc. the initiative invites everyone who wants to work together to put an uncomplicated natural beauty in the spotlight and those who feel attracted by any discipline to think of something ‘in situ’, to create and implement proposals or exhibitions, etc
the objective of the project is to let the light meridian become a light line with scenically beautiful or artistic beacons on sites that are provided by local governments and private landowners.

IN SITU ART
contemporary In situ art refers to an artistic method that dedicates the work to its home site / In situ also describes an artwork that reflects the place where it is installed. (the most famous In situ art is Land art, which takes into account, most often, the environment in which it is exercised)

THE LIGHT MERIDIAN LINE
crosses fields, forests, mountains, valleys, deserts, rivers, municipalities and cities.
the light meridian wants to grow as a line for In situ art in all its forms and disciplines.
three pioneer cities located on the light-meridian line provisionally manage the project
more municipalities, foundations, landowners on that line are asked to participate and to stimulate in situ creations on their property.

ACTIONS
the 1st open call for participation is launched. it concerns In situ creations inspired by nature, light, lines to be placed on the light meridian line.
a tourist art guide may result therefrom.
a first In situ architecture is located on the meridian line by the “muze’um L, Light, Landscape and Longitude” it functions as information center and collection point.

THE LIGHT MERIDIAN LINE INTERCONNECTING IN SITU ART
OFFICIAL START AT BLANKENBERGE 21 VII 2016
the official inauguration of the light meridian line and the 1st open call for participation take place at casino blankenberge #be by mr sven gatz, flemish minister for culture and his cultural administrations in france and spain

THE INITIATORS
1. THE CITY OF BLANKENBERGE / entry city & the casino-lighthouse, 2. THE CITY OF ROESELARE / home city with general info center 3. THE CITY OF PALAMÓS / exit city with el faro-lighthouse, 4. THE INFO CENTER: MUZE’UM L AT ROESELARE / ZILVERBERG:
a private non profit initiative with a contemporary architecture on the light meridian: an unusual concept: by a longitudinal slit in the width of the muze’um L, the sunlight converts the local longitude into a light line: a monumental light-generator.
these four commit themselves to take initiatives that give physical form to the light meridian line and allow the project to become an international light line of artistic beacons. the three initial cities take action to persuade other governments and municipalities on the meridian light line to convince private actors and artists to take part in the project.
the light meridian line will grow continuously by involving regions, cities, landowners, companies, foundations etc. located on the line.

ORIGIN
The project is an idea of co-operation of private associations, land- owners, galleries, foundations and public authorities with the aim to visualize ‘a perpendicular line from pole to pole’ by all disciplines of in situ art.
The 1st call for participation to gather ideas was launched on july 21, 2016 by Sven Gatz, flemish minister for culture and starts to grow in conjunction with the west flanders government and the cities blankenberge#BE, roeselare#BE and palamos#ES

HOW IT WORKS
As the muze’um L is the central information point of the light meridian line 1. the muze’um L collects the ideas until oct 21 2016 2. the muze’um L proposes these ideas on its website and at the exhibition space of the muze’um L,
3. the muze’um L will not finance or implement the ideas 4. the proposals could be shown in a traveling exhibition visiting cities situated on the light meridian line
BENEFIT FOR THE ARTISTS
The organization invites all the municipalities that are at 3°7’45” E to make a choice out of the proposals. they will get in touch with the artist to realize the idea: the municipalities choose the adapted idea for their site and find a way to implement it, alone or in collaboration with a landowner, a gallery in their region or an international foundation. a tourist art guide may also be considered.
TWO PARTICULARITIES
1. ARTWORKS HAVE TO BE PLACED ON THE LIGHT MERIDIAN 3°7’45“E

in belgium the lightmeridian crosses the building of the muze’um L through a slit, where the sun illuminates a light line on walls and ground. the light meridian line crosses the mediterranean to get into north africa at algiers#DZ exactly at the scheduled ‘grand musée d’afrique’, and leaves africa on the free zone of lagos#NG for entering antarctica through the atlantic ocean.
2. ARTWORKS HAVE TO BE IN SITU OR SITE SPECIFIC contemporary in situ art refers to an artistic method that dedicates the work to its home site, or takes into account the environment in which it is exercised. in situ art also describes an artwork that reflects the place where it is installed.
