IRIS VAN HERPEN

-Witteveen+Bos Art+Technology Award 2016

Karin Sluis and Henk Nieboer

On Thursday 3 November fashion designer Iris van Herpen was presented with a new book about her work, during the award ceremony where Van Herpen was honoured with the Witteveen+Bos Art+Technology award, in the Dutch city Deventer. The book comes as part of the prize and is a reflection on Van Herpen’s work by photographer Morgan O’Donovan. Iris van Herpen: ‘Morgan zooms in on the details, entering the material on what seems to be a microscopic level. His photos are so beautiful, it makes you feel like being able to actually touch the material.’

Van Herpen’s designs are characterised by a unique combination of futuristic and organic shapes that envelop the human body like wearable sculptures, and have garnered international praise in the fashion industry. For many years Van Herpen has worked on the development of experimental materials through interdisciplinary collaboration with a network of leading experts. This pursuit of innovation at the emerging interface between biology and technology is yielding promising results. The jury of the Art+Technology award, therefore deemed it time to acknowledge Van Herpen’s artistic force.

In addition to a book, an amount of money and a certificate, an exhibition is also part of the prize. The exhibition will take place in the Bergkerk Church in Deventer (the Netherlands) from 4 November up to and until 4 December 2016. It features eleven haute couture pieces, a video presentation and several extravagant shoes designed by Van Herpen. The book will be sold in the Bergkerk Church during the exhibition period, and from 5 December on via the website www.irisvanherpen.com.

About the Witteveen+Bos-prijs Art+Technology Award
The Witteveen+Bos Art+Technology Award was set up in 2001 to mark the Witteveen+Bos’s 55th anniversary. The award goes to a visual artist, nominated by an independent jury, whose work unites the disciplines of art and technology in an exceptional manner. The prize enables Witteveen+Bos to express its special appreciation of creativity, an attribute that figures prominently in the work of engineers and artists alike and is a precondition for driving innovation. The award consists of a cash prize of €15,000, publication of a book dedicated to the winner and an exhibition of his/her work in the Bergkerk church in Deventer. Previous winners were Theo Jansen, Felix Hess, Giny Vos, Marnix de Nijs, John Körmeling, Gerrit van Bakel (posthumous), Lawrence Malstaf, Edwin van der Heide, Geert Mul, Dick Raaijmakers, Angelo Vermeulen, Driessens & Verstappen, Geert-Jan Hobijn, and Renzo Martens.

The Witteveen+Bos Board of Directors Karin Sluis and Henk Nieboer open this very well-made book in a foreword on sustainability, technologies, innovation, new opportunities, alternative business models, and how Van Herpen’s work pushes all boundaries.

Sluis and Nieboer posit: “As first designer using 3D printed design, her work is innovative, contemporary and offers a tantalizing glimpse on the future.” They describe the atelier and working process, Van Herpen’s fashion, high-tech and hand-made components, materials and techniques, the creativity and all that merits Iris van Herpen’s receiving of this Witteveen+Bos Art+Technology Award 2016.

The pages on the works – as major part of this book – with great photos by Morgan O’Donovan are divided into the chapters Escapism, Micro, Wilderness embodied, Biopiracy, Magnetic motion, Hacking infinity, Quaquaversal and Lucid. This is followed by some pages of these titles’ descriptions, text about Van Herpen, and an interview by Margriet Schavemaker, “Co-creation between innovation and craftsmanship.”

These zingy conservation pages give good insight in Van Herpen’s choices, the process of working, her collaboration with – among others – dancers, architects, scientists, institutes, companies and assistants, and her traveling and developing new materials. The book closes with the jury report and short bios of the jury members.

This is just my kind of book!

Everyone interested in fashion, textile, material and advanced techniques (especially students!) should read this book, or at least acquire it as fantastic resource to recharge.

Speaking on tension and energy!
