Highlights TextielLab: Kustaa Saksi – Hypnopompic
24/4/2014-2/11/2014

The TextielMuseum’s TextielLab presents the work of Finnish graphic designer Kustaa Saksi (1975) in the new Highlights exhibition. Saksi realised ‘Hypnopompic’; a series of eight vivid large-scale tapestries. Hypnopompic means the dreamlike state of consciousness filled with illusions that can occur between waking and sleeping.
The brightly coloured pieces combine recognizable creatures and organic designs with surreal visualisations.

A wide range of natural and synthetic materials, from viscose, lurex and metallic yarns, to alpaca wool and mohair, add extra depth. The wall hangings on display have all been developed and produced in the TextielLab.

An accompanying film illustrates the design and development process and offers a glimpse into the workplace. Especially for the exhibition Saksi develops a new white tapestry which can be brought to life by
projection.

The imaginative works of Kustaa Saksi gradually conquers the world. Last year his work could be seen in Helsinki and New York and this April it can be admired
at the prestigious design fair Salone del Mobile in Milan.

‘The TextielMuseum is a working museum set in a former textile factory. It stages inspiring exhibitions about design and art while also offering tailored educational programmes. Located on site, the TextielLab is a unique knowledge centre that is both a highly specialised workshop for producing experimental knits and woven fabrics, as well as an open atelier embracing innovation. National and international designers, architects, artists and promising students are coached by product developers and technical experts to discover the endless opportunities in the field, from yarns, to computerized techniques and crafts. The extensive library, museum collection and exhibitions are an excellent research and inspiration resource for visitors as well as clients of the TextielLab.
