TEXTIELMUSEUM

BUILDING WITH TEXTILES

International architecture puts textiles in the spotlight
27/9/2014-25/1/2015

In BUILDING WITH TEXTILES, the TextielMuseum presents work by internationally renowned architects as well as interior projects that put textiles in the spotlight. Building with textiles and flexible materials has aesthetic, functional and environmental advantages. That is why textiles are now seen as the fifth key building material alongside steel, stone, concrete and wood. In addition, the development of interior textiles with special functions – from air purification to integrated light, images and sound – offers new possibilities to design smart and interactive interiors.

The exhibition is part of a long-term project initiated by the TextielMuseum and the TextielLab. It comprises an extended research and development plan spanning several years, special commissions for the museum collection and an international expert meeting organised together with Het Nieuwe Instituut.

The exhibition presents a historical overview of tent-like structures that provided shelter for early nomadic tribes. Also featured are career highlights of the most visionary engineers and architects of the 20th century. The real focus however, is on pioneering projects by international architects such as OMA, Kennedy & Violich Architecture, DO|SU Studio Architecture, SL Rasch and soma. These projects truly reveal what building with textile materials and techniques can achieve.

Visitor as investigator

Not only is there much to see, visitors are also invited to participate. They are free to investigate the possibilities of building with textiles for themselves.
In a working atelier they can tread in the footsteps of an architect. Stretchy textiles and fixed forms can be used to make a scale model of a building. The maker can capture his or her model on film. The films are then displayed in the online gallery of the TextielMuseum website.
