EXPERIENCE IN MOTION

VOLVO MEETS VAN EIJK & VAN DER LUBBE

Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe dive into the future of modern transport for Volvo. With ‘Experience in Motion’ they present a dramatically different vision of the car as we know it. Part 1 was successfully launched at Dutch Design Week 2014, with a reinvented vehicle and a set of products that stimulate social interaction between passengers. Here, Volvo’s past and future blend into a mobile meeting place.

Next year will promise a thrilling part 2 and eye-opening part 3. Driving your car will never be the same!

In the near future the car as we know it will no longer exist. High-tech developments and the shifting social climate will bring dramatic changes. Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe explore the future of modern transport, creating a new mobile encounter: ‘Experience in Motion’.

At the Dutch Design Week 2014 part 1 of our threefold vision was presented: the car as a mobile meeting point. A reinvented vehicle with a complementary set of products to stimulate social interaction. The message is clear: hop on, enjoy the company of others and have an inspiring trip.?In 2015 two new ‘concept cars’ by Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe will be launched.

Inner focus
Sitting side by side, seatbelts on, eyes on the road; this scenario is history in the Volvo of the future. After all, the car is now self-driving and safer than ever. Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe focus on the interior and see the entire volume as the social domain of the traveller.
What opportunities can the shared inner space offer en route from A to B?

Past and present
The lustrous black cloth reflects the past and present of Volvo. The first image layer depicts the Swedish context, topped off by the company’s success story in silver thread. Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe add a new, fresh palette to the typical Volvo colours.

Travel as quality time
The metallic inner lining forms a strong contrast with the seating in warm Scandinavian pine. Inside, the area is stripped of technical applications, allowing full space for social interaction. Time spent travelling becomes quality time: meet your fellow passengers, find out about those facing you and engage with each other.

Fresh page
The outside pattern is repeated in these paper writing pads. Open, inviting, and ready for all of those thoughts and ideas. Exchange contact details with one another to continue the dialogue.

Table talk
The best conversations take place at the table over a good meal. In this cast-iron pan are all the ingredients for a pleasant trip. The pan symbolises allemansrätten, the Swedish principle of sharing. The material, form and iron mark on the bottom – Volvo’s logo – refer to the origins of the car.

A first impression of what to expect is revealed at the KunstRAI (June 2014). Van Eijk & Van der Lubbe design a booth for Volvo that is part of their design process. They will show us the position they assume in this project as well as the different roles they play in it.
