Established in 1802, this distinction is France's premier award and for two centuries has been awarded to both French and foreign personalities who uphold French ideals. Madeleine joins the company of a number of other American honorees including John Ashbery, Renée Fleming, Wynton Marsalis, Barbra Streisand, and Elie Wiesel. Madeleine's dedication to French culture, and her ongoing efforts to showcase work by acclaimed French artists and performers to Chicago audiences at the MCA is manifest in this prestigious award.
